You're tired. There's a baby on your hip and a toddler pulling at your skirt, and somewhere in between the two of them you're still supposed to figure out dinner. I see this every day, in mothers just like you, and almost every one of them asks some version of the same question: "Am I feeding my kid, right?"
Here's the honest answer: most of us are missing something big, and it's not our fault. Baby food aisles are full of pouches that look healthy. Snack companies spend a lot of money making cardboard-tasting bars look wholesome. Somewhere in all that noise, one plain fact gets buried — your child's brain and body are built out of what you feed them. Not "supported by." Built.
And here's the part most articles skip entirely: that building starts before your baby ever takes a bite of food. It starts with you, in pregnancy, and it continues through the exhausting, depleted months after birth. This article walks through both — your child's needs, and yours, at every stage.
Quick roadmap of the stages I'll reference throughout: most babies are exclusively breastfed (or formula-fed) for the first 6 months, per WHO and AAP guidance. Around the 6-month mark, complementary foods — solids — are introduced, while breastfeeding continues alongside them, ideally to 2 years or beyond. Every age I mention below sits inside that timeline.
Blind Spot #1: The First 1,000 Days Don't Forgive Mistakes Easily
You've probably heard "the first 1,000 days" — from conception to a child's second birthday. It sounds like a slogan, but it's a real biological window. This is when a child's brain grows faster than at any other point in life, while bone, muscle, and organs are forming at the same time. Nutrients missing during this window are much harder to make up for later.
A widely cited nutrition review in the journal Animal Frontiers found that children whose growth is stunted early in life go on to have lower IQ, worse school performance, more behavior problems, and lower earning potential as adults. That's not a small thing — that's a life trajectory being shaped in a highchair.
Blind Spot #2: Plant Food Alone Can't Do the Job
This is the one that surprises parents most, especially in a culture that treats "plant-based" as automatically healthier. For a growing child, it isn't.
That same review found that animal-sourced foods — meat, eggs, dairy — supply the nutrients children are most commonly missing worldwide: iron, zinc, vitamin A, and iodine, along with a more complete protein profile than plant foods offer. A striking number from that research: it takes about 2,400 grams of spinach to supply the same usable iron as 625 grams of beef, because the iron in meat is absorbed by the body far more easily than the iron in plants.
This shows up in real outcomes, not just theory. A UK study following children's diets from 6 to 24 months found that those who ate more meat in that window had higher IQ scores at age 8. A Nepal study of over 700 mother-child pairs found toddlers eating any animal-source food at 18 months scored meaningfully higher on developmental testing at 24 months. And a Kenyan school-feeding trial found that adding meat to children's diets raised exam scores by 45% over children given an equal-calorie diet without it.
I'll be straight with you: not every study agrees on exactly how much or which type of animal food matters most, and researchers are still working out the details. But the direction of the evidence is consistent, and the biological reason is simple — iron, zinc, B12, choline, and complete protein aren't optional for a developing brain. They're raw materials.
Blind Spot #3: Iron Deficiency Doesn't Announce Itself
Iron deficiency in infancy is quiet — your baby can't tell you their brain is running short. But the research here is some of the clearest in pediatric nutrition.
Here's the timing that matters: a full-term baby is born with enough stored iron to last roughly 4 to 6 months. Breast milk itself is naturally low in iron, so it isn't designed to refill that store — it's designed to feed a baby whose iron needs are still being met from birth reserves. That's exactly why the standard advice to start solids around 6 months isn't arbitrary. It lines up with the moment your baby's own iron stores are running out, which is also the moment complementary foods need to start pulling their weight.
A landmark Costa Rica cohort followed children with iron-deficiency anemia in infancy all the way into adulthood. Even after treatment corrected their iron levels, they still scored 8 to 9 points lower on cognitive testing at age 19, and went on to report worse outcomes at age 25. A 2022 study in a modern, high-resource setting found a similar gap — 6 to 7 points — showing this isn't just a low-resource-country problem.
Iron from animal sources ("heme iron") is absorbed far more efficiently by a baby's body than iron from plants. This is one of the clearest, most research-backed reasons to introduce meat as one of the very first solid foods at 6 months — not to wait months into the weaning process, which is when parents tend to be most hesitant.
Blind Spot #4: The Liver-and-Marrow Trend — Powerful, But Easy to Overdo
I've watched a real shift happen in the last couple of years. More and more parents are blending liver into smoothies and sauces, or stirring soft-cooked bone marrow into purées, chasing the nutrient density of "nose to tail" eating for their babies. I'm glad to see it. I'm also glad to slow it down a little, because this is the one place where "more is better" is actually wrong.
Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet — iron, B12, folate, and vitamin A all in one bite. But that same vitamin A is stored in the body, not flushed out, and an infant's liver can't process a large or frequent dose of it the way an adult's can. Liver shouldn't be offered before your baby has started solids at around 6 months — not before, and not as a way to "get ahead" on nutrition while still exclusively breastfed. Once solids begin, pediatric feeding guidance is consistent: no more than about 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of liver purée, once or twice a week — not daily, and not as a regular smoothie add-in. There's a well-documented case from the 1980s of infants developing vitamin A toxicity — bulging soft spots, irritability, vomiting — after being fed chicken liver homogenate daily for months. That's the outer edge of what over-doing it looks like, and it's exactly why "a little, occasionally, once solids have started" is the rule, not "as much as possible, as early as possible."
Bone marrow is a gentler story and can be introduced at the same starting point — around 6 months, alongside your baby's other first foods. It's mostly fat, collagen, and minerals rather than concentrated vitamin A, which makes it easier to include a bit more often once solids are underway — soft-cooked and blended into a purée, or as the base of a mineral-rich bone broth. Many cultures have leaned on bone broth for new mothers during postpartum recovery for exactly this reason, long before it became a wellness trend.
The bottom line: liver and marrow both belong in a baby's diet. Liver belongs in small, occasional spoonfuls — not a daily smoothie habit. Marrow can show up a bit more regularly. Rotate them in alongside muscle meat like ground beef, chicken, and fish, rather than leaning on liver as the main event.
What About You, Mama? Prenatal and Postpartum Needs
Nobody hands you a nutrition plan for yourself when you're busy building someone else's body. But your needs are just as real, and they shift dramatically across three stages — and your baby's own timeline runs right alongside yours.
During pregnancy (all 9 months), your iron requirement nearly doubles to 27 mg a day, to build your blood volume and your baby's iron stores — the same stores that will carry your baby through the first 4 to 6 months of life, before solids start. Your choline needs rise to 450 mg a day for the full nine months — choline is essential for your baby's neural tube and brain development, and it's a nutrient most prenatal vitamins under-dose (many contain 50 mg or less). Two eggs a day gets you about halfway there; the rest comes from meat, liver, and fish. DHA (an omega-3 found in fish) is being laid down in your baby's brain fastest in the third trimester.
After birth, through the exclusive breastfeeding window (birth to about 6 months), your needs don't drop — for iron, your body is actually recovering from the blood loss of delivery itself, which most women underestimate. Postpartum anemia is common and often missed, showing up as exhaustion that gets written off as "just new-mom tiredness." Your choline requirement climbs even higher once you're breastfeeding — to 550 mg a day for the first year postpartum — because your milk is delivering it straight to your baby. Protein needs stay elevated too, for tissue repair after delivery and to support milk production.
Your baby, from about 6 to 24 months, needs iron, zinc, B12, choline, and DHA delivered in small, concentrated, easily absorbed bites — which is exactly what animal protein does best, and what plant food, on its own, struggles to provide. This is also the window pediatric guidance recommends introducing fish and other allergenic foods (egg, peanut) rather than delaying them — current AAP guidance says there's no evidence that waiting past 4 to 6 months prevents allergies, and some evidence it does the opposite. So, the same age that calls for iron-rich meat is the age that calls for fish, too — introduced on its own, one new food at a time.
Put simply: the same foods that rebuild you after birth are the foods that build your baby. That's not a coincidence. It's why we built a box around both of you, not just one.
So, What Do You Actually Do?
Put animal protein at the center of the plate, not the side — for both of you. Ground beef, eggs, and liver give you and your child iron, zinc, B12, choline, and complete protein in forms the body uses well.
Introduce meat around 6 months, right alongside your baby's first solids — not months into weaning. That's precisely when your baby's birth iron stores are running low and breast milk alone isn't enough.
Treat liver as a small, occasional food, starting at 6 months — a spoonful once or twice a week, not a daily smoothie ingredient. Let bone marrow (also from 6 months) and muscle meats do the daily work.
Don't neglect your own plate after birth. Iron, choline, and protein needs stay high or even climb after delivery, right when you have the least time to think about food.
Don't wait for a report card — or a burnout — to notice a problem. Brain, mood, and energy changes can start before they're visible. Prevention beats correction.
